We encourage you to come and watch a class. Matter of fact, you can take advantage of a FREE introductory lesson. What better way but to experience it. Hope to hear from you soon!
No previous experience in the martial arts is required. All you need is the desire to learn. However, we welcome students of any martial arts background.
No. Everyone trains at his or her own level. If you are not used to hard physical training, that's fine. You will find that your strength, endurance, and flexibility increase steadily as you work out. If you are a conditioned athlete however, don't worry, you will get a good workout. We welcome students of all backgrounds and abilities. People who are physically challenged are encouraged to join. Tang Soo Do is very much a personal art.
Anyone over the age of 3 is welcome to join. Young children will train in a separate group, but may also train with the older students based upon the discretion of the instructor. There is no upper age limit. As many senior citizen black belts have shown, it is never too late to start.
Students will train primarily with other students of the same rank and general age. Beginners are no different. Your first week or two of classes will be spent with other beginners learning the basics. Beginners are welcome at any time and frequently get one-on-one training with the instructor for their first classes.
Yes. All classes taught are strictly monitored by the instructors to ensure complete safety.
The time it takes to become proficient varies with each individual depending on the effort they put forth. At Texas Tang Soo Do, students are very often surprised by their own abilities in as little as three to six months. This training will give you the confidence of knowing that you can defend yourself in most situations. Your real goal, however, should be to attain the rank of Black Belt. This level of proficiency typically takes about three to four years. Once again, however, this will vary depending on your level of effort and commitment.
Classes are held Monday through Thursday (depending upon age, rank, and program). It is recommended that you participate in all assigned classes and a certain amount of practice time in between classes as a good level of training. This allows the student time to work on material between classes and become proficient before new concepts are introduced.
Absolutely. Practical self defense is an important part of this complete Martial Art. How to roll, fall, break out of a hold, joint locks and manipulation, and how to defend against weapons are some of the aspects of self defense taught for real life situations.
All students interested in sparring are required to wear protective equipment (head, foot, and hand gear, mouthguard, and protective cup for males) and are strictly supervised. All sparring activity is monitored by the instructors.
Children are taught that the martial arts are not to be used as an offensive weapon, but rather to defend oneself in certain situations. Aggressive behavior is channeled into assertiveness to increase the child's self esteem, increase self discipline and build character. Our program also helps the shy child to develop self confidence and become more assertive.
Not right away. If you enjoy the class and join one of the programs, you will receive a free Martial Arts uniform. You are welcome to 'shop around' for a uniform, but we offer them at a considerable discount at the studio with the proper patches and stenciling.
